Materials: Canva, blur app, canvas paper, printer, acrylic paint, paint brushes, letter stencil Process: I took photos of my subject in different positions with the book over her head or her head in the book. I then took a photo of a stack of books. I used the eraser tool in canva to isolate both subjects so i could put them on top of the spiraling words. I put a dot to be a guiding point for all the words to spiral around. Then I made a list of words, randomized them, and made them spiral around. I added a blur and made the central point for it the same as the one I used for the words. The i put the person and the stack of books over it. I printed that on canvas paper then used a stencil to write the words "can you just", then I painted those words in addition to the word "focus". Idea: This piece represents the overwhelming spiraling thoughts that rush through the readers mind. The girl has her head in the book to show the discouragement and feeling of failure. Th...

Materials: Cut magazines, newspaper, glue, photoshop, clear plastic sheet Process: I had someone take a photo of me holding a book, made the photo black and white, notanized the photo, printed multiple copies, taped it to the back of a piece of a plastic sheet, I tore out a bunch of pieces of magazines to use, then cut out pieces according to value to make the person and the book using an X-acto knife, then I glued it to the plastic sheet. I tore the pieces instead of cutting them for the background and table. Then I cut out the colored words and moved them a few times to make it look like they were pouring out of the book. I carefully chose what words to use to express the things that one with a learning disability might think of while they're reading. The physical product was not as clear as I intended so I put the photo into photoshop and added more contrast between the face, the shirt, and the background. Additionally I copied and flipped the right side of the book to make it m...

Materials: phone camera for photography, photoshop, a book, a torch lighter  Process: I added burns on the book to show how it was already breaking down before i lit it on fire completely. I then had my friend hold the book but didn’t like how the photos were turning out so instead I told her how to take the photo and I posed. Then I experimented with different angles. Once I had sufficient photos of me holding the book, I threw it into the fire to capture a couple more photos of it burning to represent giving up after trying again and again. Idea: I wanted to use fire to represent the passion in reading a book and the anger and frustration one might feel trying to read the book and not being able to.  Additionally we experimented with smoke to represent the confusion and cloudy thinking one with a learning disability might feel when they are trying to read. I made the piece a triptych to represent the flow of emotions. Starting with curiosity and interest but cloudy thoughts...
